Sunshine Class- Summer School Week 1- Oceans

We had so much fun learning, playing, reading, dancing, drawing and creating this week... and it was all about the ocean! In Language Arts, students chose something related to the ocean, then wrote a "shape poem" about that object/ animal. After working on their poems for a few days, they got to read them to the class on Friday.

In cooking, students got to make a "beach in a cup" using different crushed up biscuits as sand, and ice cream with blue food coloring as the ocean. They also created mini umbrellas for extra decoration!

For our math activities, students took turns skip-counting in different ways as they "walked the plank". They also used pattern blocks in different ways to create various sea animals!

During game time, students learned a variety of new games, such as Sharks and Minnows (the minnows had to sneak around collecting fish food without the shark seeing), Good Morning, Captain (where the captain has to guess who is the one talking), and Clown Fish (where the clown fish has to act funny to get the other fish to laugh or smile!). They also enjoyed playing games on the Smart Board, such as the ocean food chain game, and an ocean animals memory game!

For science, students practiced classifying shells based on different features, such as texture, size, shape, color, and type of shell. We also did some research online to find out more about where different shells actually come from, and we were surprised to learn the answers!
During park time, we got a chance to let out our energy and get wet at the same time! Students participated in a water balloon toss, and also got a chance to spray each other with water guns to cool down!

Finally, we had many chances for art and coloring throughout the week! Students' favorite activity was using paper plates to make all sorts of different sea creatures, such as crabs, turtles, jelly fish and sharks.

All in all, we had a blast, and can't wait for more exciting adventures next week!
