ELC Class Week 2-Animals

Dear Sunrise Parents,

We had another great week of summer school. We played a lot of games and made a lot of new friends!

In math, we  arranged animals from smallest to largest. We also  counted and clipped clothespins on animal number cards. We then used the clothespins to make various animals to determine how many  were used for each of them. Based on the math video of the week, we learned that the longest snake known was Medusa so we were all excited to use clothespins to make a snake that was 25 feet, 2 inches long. Later on in the week, we looked at non-standard unit of measurement and used lego bricks to measure the height of various animals.

Yuito used six clothespins to make a giraffe.
Kaito showed great confidence as he
counted and matched the correct number.
Tomoki showed good hand strength as he pinched the
 clothespin on the animal card.

Tomoki's attempt at making Medusa, the longest snake in the world.

We used  lego bricks to measure the height of various animals.

In Language Arts, we read stories about various animals. Every day, we engaged in reading reflection where we drew pictures about what we remember  from the stories. Throughout the week, we used letter flashcards to teach letter names and sounds. Each letter of the alphabet was paired with an animal. Every morning, we played a card game to identify various animals and their sounds. We were happy to know the names of all the animals  by the end of the week.

Group Discussion-What is Your Favorite Animal ?
After the discussion, students were encouraged to color or draw a picture of their favorite animal.

Students played a card game to help them remember the names and sounds of various animals.

We did a lot of science and art activities throughout the week. We explored animal sounds with a pretend trip to an animal shop. We then used paper plate to make our favorite animal. Later on in the week, we combined science with motor skills and made an elephant fruit snack. For our experiment this week, we used capillary action science experiment to make our own giraffe skins.
The students used paint and paper plate to make various animals.

The Animal Shop
The students  went  to an animal shop to buy materials to make animal puppets for  their show and tell presentation.

Handmade Animal Puppets

Ishin was very happy to use her animal puppet for the show and tell presentation.

Giraffe Science Experiment
For our science experiment, we used materials to represent the different types of animal skin. We touched each type of skin and talked about how they felt and compared the texture to one another.  After which, we used capillary action science experiment to make our own giraffe skins.

Tomoki used capillary action science experiment  to make his own giraffe skin.

We made an elephant dessert  in cooking class. We were very happy to wash, peel, cut and slice the fruits.

Center Time -Dramatic Play
We pretended to be veterinarians in center time. Tomoki was very pleased to take care of a sick giraffe.

Throughout the week, we sang songs and engaged in a lot of physical movements. One of our favorite games was where we  pretended to be various animals and mimicked their  movements.
