Sunflower Week 5 Camping

Hello Sunflower parents!

We had an excellent fifth week of summer school at Abroad International! This week our theme was all about camping. Students had a chance to experiment, research and share about camping  they learned while developing their English skills.

Upper primary students learned about camping and items needed for camping. We watched a movie about camps, read books about camping and tried to decide 10 most needed things needed for camping. First, students tried to guess, later on they visited library to find books about camping. All students decided that knife, matches, camp light, extra clothes, sleeping bag, tent, emergency phone are the most important items for campers.

In math we learned more mass and conversion. The idea was to estimate what was the mass of a regular camping pack, Students searched online the average mass of an item in the list. At first, the total mass became about 90kg. Later on, we experimented and found out that it is too heavy to carry. Students tried to carry 30 kg, 20 kg and finally decided that 8 - 10 kg range is an acceptable mass for Grade 4 student. Hence, students reviewed the items in their camping list to adjust the mass to 10 kg. It was really informative and fun.

In cooking class we made  s'mores! . It is a first recipe that comes to mind when we talk about camping. Instead of fire we used hot plate. Students had fun melting marshmallows and putting them between cookies with chocolate.

Students tried to make home made compass using magnet, cork and piece of metal wire. It worked perfectly and they know how to find north using home made compass.

We also had a good time at the park cooling off with a water fights! Unfortunately, we had a chance to go to the park for water fight only once. On Thursday, due Typhoon 20, the school closed early.
