Sunflower Class Week 4: Game World

 Welcome to Game World!!!

Our last week of summer school was full of adventure by delving into a world of strategy, creativity, and imagination.  Students played a variety of games, some involving some problem solving and others that were physical and required stealth.  We learned about different styles of games by playing both familiar and unfamiliar games and analyzing pros and cons of each.

At the beginning of our week students worked together to create rules and challenges based on blank board game templates.  Everyone did a great job and changed an empty game board into something fun for all ages.

After trying out a variety of new things, students divided into groups to design their own game entirely from their imagination.  Here are some of their amazing creations:

Frog Life: Students worked with a program called Scratch to create a video game online.  They learned how to make and alter coding in order to design a frog jumping game in which the player is the frog and must jump over approaching blocks.

Mysterious Treasure: Players move their game tokens to move from room to room in a haunted house in search of diamonds found in three treasure boxes.  They must collect treasure cards and avoid spiders that attack you.  There can be only one winner!

Mini Base: Baseball fans, this game is for you.  This two player game consists of pitching and hitting and follows the basic rules of baseball.  Drawing cards can earn you hits, strikes, or outs.  The player with the most points by the end of the 5th inning is the winner.

Clue School Edition: There is a mystery in the school and it is up to the players to get to the bottom of it.  Following the rules of Clue, this version is set in a school with up to ten different players to choose from, all with motives to commit the crime.  Problem solving and deduction skills help detectives solve the mystery of whodunit.

As you can see in our pictures below, kids did a great job making some wonderful ideas come to live.  Game on!
